Several hundred domain owners will receive a letter from DENIC within the next few weeks. The respective domain owners should read that letter carefully if they do not want to lose their domain name.

The number of Internet domains with the extension ".de" will surpass three million this week-end. Every month the central German registry DENIC in Frankfurt registers about 200,000 new domains.

On Monday, DENIC proceeded to close down the domain "heil-hitler.de". This domain was registered through a web host called Strato on 3 August.

DENIC has brought itself into line with established international practice by simplifying its terms and conditions for the registration of domains. It has made them more transparent and further strengthened the position of domain holders.
