New German States Catch up in Domain Numbers
DENIC publishes domain statistics 2001 - highest domain density in and around Munich
The eastern part of Germany catches up to the West in Internet domain usage, although in some areas of the new states the absolute number of .de-domains is still far below the level of the old states. This is a result of the regional domain statistics of the DENIC registry for the year 2001. Brandenburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Thüringen were able to book 50% growth rates compared to the year 2000. At county level the spread was again huge. The Südwestpfalz and Potsdam have more than doubled their domain numbers, whereas in other areas they sunk up to 20%.
The numbers are based on DENIC's domain database as of December 31, 2001. Just like in the previous year the analysis took place in cooperation with Diplom-Kaufmann Mark Krymalowski and the Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeographisches Institut at the university of Cologne. For all counties and cities the number of registered .de-domains are available in absolute numbers as well as in relation to the number of residents.
The Top 10 ranking of counties and cities with the most .de-domains has not changed much in 2001. Only Hannover (now #8) and Bonn (one down to #9) have traded places. Berlin is still on top with a little more than 280,000 domains with Munich and Hamburg coming in next with almost 200,000 domains each.
In relation to the number of residents Munich city and the surrounding Munich county lead. For each 1000 Munich residents there are 163 Domains, in Munich country the number is 143. Similar numbers exist in Bonn (147) and Düsseldorf (142). Hamburg leads the states, in the hanseatic city 112 domains exist for every 1000 residents, followed by Berlin with 83 domains. Third is Hessen, which comes in at the best non-city state with 72 domains. The statistical national average is that 60 of 1000 German residents have a domain, in the year 2000 the number was 43.
The complete analysis is available for download as an Excel Spreadsheet, in addition we have ZIP-files of vector-format charts available for the absolute and relative distribution of domains in Germany.
