Initial Registration of New .de Domains Started Successfully

Frankfurt, 23 October 2009

The new possibilities for registering .de domains has met with great interest among the users. DENIC as the responsible registry announces the following interim result of the registration process being conducted since 09:00 this morning: By 14:00, 73998 applications have been received. 27360 new .de domains are already registered. The number of the registered new .de domains can also be followed online at www.denic.de. The figures are updated every five minutes.

Sabine Dolderer, member of DENIC'S Executive Board, is pleased with the current results: "The large number of domain requests we have received documents the enthusiasm for the new domain options and once again shows the attractiveness of .de domains. And thanks to the excellent cooperation of our members, the German domain landscape will be even more diversified and attractive in the future."

DENIC has changed its Domain Guidelines and thus abolished most of the restrictions previously applicable with regard to the registration of second level domains below the TLD .de. In future, also one- and two-digit domains composed of letters of the Latin alphabet as well as domain names composed exclusively of numerals will be allowed. Additionally, interested users may reserve domains identical with combinations of letters that are used for German motor-vehicle number plates or for Top Level Domains such as "com" or "org". DENIC has compiled further detail information about the new Domain Guidelines on its website at www.denic.de.
