DENIC Expands Nameserver Network for .de zone

Number to Increase to Twelve - Better World-wide Coverage through New Computers in Japan and USA

With the setup of new nameservers in Stuttgart, London and Tokyo DENIC continues to expand its network of nameservers. Within the next two weeks computers at two locations in the USA (Elmsford, NY and San Jose, CA) will be added. "The necessary changes to IANA's root servers have already been requested and we expect that they will be implemented shortly", says DENIC board member Sabine Dolderer.

Nameservers ensure that an Internet service is accessible, because for that a mapping between domain and the respective IP address must exist in the network. The central nameserver for all .de domains is operated by DENIC eG in Frankfurt. Copies of the information on this primary nameserver are provisioned on a number of secondary nameservers. With the already existing secondaries in Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Dortmund, Vienna, Amsterdam and Stockholm there will be a total of twelve computers in operation after the expansion. The world-wide distribution makes sure that the data is available quickly everywhere and that the failure of one computer does not lead to excessive delays.

In peak times every single server answers 20,000 and more requests per minute. All in all more than 100 million requests are counted every day.
