DENIC eG opens for new Members

Registry adapts pre-requisites for acceptance into the cooperative to changed market realities

An update of the member acceptance policy will in the future enable more interested parties to become members of DENIC eG. The domain administrator's general assembly has agreed to a corresponding resolution. According to the new rules a membership is possible for everyone, who administrates domains, has a stable financial background and can demonstrate comprehensive technical knowledge in the area of domain administration.

"Five years after the foundation of DENIC eG it is time to adapt the member acceptance policy to the changed market realities", justifies Sebastian von Bomhard, chairman of the Board of Directors, the new policy. "The changes apply mainly to formal aspects and organisational pre-requisites, we do not cut back on technical competence requirements. We want to preserve the high quality of domain administration in Germany."

The cooperative has enjoyed a successful startup phase in the last five years. Meanwhile the number of participating organisations rose from less than 40 at the foundation at the end of 1996 to more than 160. Last year four to five new members were accepted per month. With more than 5.4 million domains DENIC administrates the second largest Internet namespace world-wide.

The new regulation becomes effective as soon as the changes to the statute have been posted to the cooperative register. This will be the case in a few weeks. The exact start date and details concerning the new application process will be published soon on the DENIC website.
