Surge in Domain Numbers As Amended .fi Registration Rules Take Effect
The number of domains registered under .fi shot up by a third within a single day. This was brought about by a change in the registration rules. It used to be the case that domains could only be registered under .fi if they were identical with the name (or brand name) of an individual, an organization or a commercial business. The rules have now been relaxed. It remains the case that private individuals can only register domains if these are entered in the Finish trade register. However, it is planned to modify that rule as well. Before the amended rule took effect, there were no more than approximately 42 000 domains registered in Finland.
